Daniel: A Journey of Grief, Growth, and Everyday Kindness

Born in Walthamstow, London, Daniel’s roots have always stretched across the Irish Sea. His parents, originally from Armagh and Bellaghy, moved the family back to Northern Ireland, where he now calls home. Working in retail, Daniel describes himself as thoughtful, caring, and loyal—qualities that have shaped his experiences of both loss and personal growth.

His pivotal moment came four years ago with the death of his father from throat cancer. Grieving is not a linear process, and he is still navigating its weight, but he has found comfort in talking to people and sharing memories. He speaks warmly of his father, remembering the laughter that once filled their home and his sharp sense of humour, a presence that still lingers in the stories he tells.

Beyond grief, shyness has been his greatest challenge. Yet, rather than retreat, Daniel actively pushes himself beyond his comfort zone. Simply taking part in the PicStoryBelfast photoshoot in a public space is a testament to his quiet determination—to show up, to take new opportunities, to embrace the unfamiliar.

Where does he feel most alive? At music concerts, immersed in the energy of indie rock, surrounded by the rhythm and pulse of a shared experience.

His advice is simple but sincere: Be kind. It’s a phrase that may have become overused in recent years, but for Daniel, it is something to live by every single day. Whether through small acts of generosity or simply acknowledging others with a hello, kindness is a force that can change the course of someone’s day. Since his father’s passing, he makes a point of telling those close to him that he loves them—something we often assume but don’t say enough.

Looking to Belfast’s future, Daniel sees a city that is continually improving and hopes it continues to inspire further cultural and wellbeing initiatives. A city that not only grows, but nurtures.
