Norman - he's had 65 jobs!

Norman was zipping around on his mobility scooter when we ran into him, full of stories and zest for life.

Leaving school at 13 and landing his first job at 14, Norman’s journey through life has been anything but ordinary. He reckons he’s had around 65 jobs! Among his fascinating roles, he was one of Belfast’s last gas lamp lighters in 1956, sailed the seas with the Merchant Navy in 1959, traveling to Canada and Australia, and spent 40 joyous years as an antiques dealer.

Describing himself as an enthusiastic atheist, Norman laughs at the idea of facing challenges. Apart from the inevitable aches of old age, he feels his upbringing on the back streets of Belfast equipped him with independence, resilience, and a fearless attitude. He’s dodged danger more times than he can count.

Norman’s claim to fame? He’s a maestro with the spoons! And his happy place? None other than Wetherspoons, where he enjoys the lively atmosphere.

Success for Norman is simple: happiness. Every morning, he stands before the only mirror in his house and gives himself a pep talk, setting the tone for a positive day.

His advice to the younger generation? Embrace life fully and never let schooling interfere with their education.

As an avid backpacker, Norman loves chatting with visitors to Belfast. He’s delighted to hear their glowing reviews of the city and its friendly people.

Norman’s stories and spirited outlook make him a truly unforgettable character, embodying the vibrant heart of Belfast.
