Raphael - the Postman

Raphael: A Life of Service, Love, and Daily Kindness

Today, we meet Raphael, a retired postman from Kircubbin who now lives in Newtownards. As we wrapped up our photoshoot, his wife Marion joined us—a fitting addition to a story that is as much about love as it is about dedication and connection.

For 35 years, Raphael served as a postman with Royal Mail, delivering more than just letters and parcels—he delivered presence, familiarity, and, in many cases, a lifeline of human contact. Friendly, caring, and direct, he is someone who genuinely loves people, a quality that shaped his years walking the same routes and building relationships along the way.

His stories of life as a postman are steeped in warmth and poignancy. He fondly recalls an elderly lady to whom he delivered a newspaper every day, a small but meaningful act that became part of his routine. He remembers growing up with the people of his village, carrying that familiarity into adulthood as he delivered their mail. And on a bitterly cold Christmas Day, he was gifted a 50p piece by an old woman—a moment of generosity and appreciation that has stayed with him ever since.

But if there is one moment that defined Raphael’s life, it was in March 1974, when, after just three dates, his girlfriend Marion turned to him and asked, “Well, do you want to marry me?” The rest, as they say, is history. Together, they built a life, raising three children and fostering another, each of whom they are immensely proud of.

For Raphael, the place where he feels most alive is in nature. He speaks of his love for ancient woodlands in spring, particularly when the bluebells are in bloom—a reminder that, no matter how much the world changes, some things remain quietly eternal.

His advice is something he lived every morning, no matter the weather: “Learn to live every day.” As a postman, he forced himself to step outside, to put on a smile, and to embrace whatever came his way. It’s a lesson that stretches far beyond the letterbox—a philosophy of resilience, optimism, and simply showing up for life.
